On these two dates, the sun rises early morning and illuminates the temple 60 meters cut inside the mountain, and three of the four statues in the sanctuary. What is the best time of year to visit Egypt?

The best time to visit Egypt is during its cooler winter months, from October to April. During this period, the weather is mild and pleasant, making it ideal for exploring Egypt's outdoor treasures, such as the pyramids, Luxor's Karnak Temple, and the Valley of the Kings, without the intense heat that characterizes the Egyptian summer.

Why Visit in the Winter Months?

Mild Weather: Temperatures during these months are cooler, ranging from 10°C (50°F) to 26°C (79°F), depending on the location and time of day. This is a stark contrast to the summer months, when temperatures can soar above 40°C (104°F) in many parts of the country.

Comfortable Sightseeing:  The cooler temperatures make it much more comfortable to spend time outdoors, whether you're exploring ancient ruins or taking a Nile cruise. The heat in Egypt can be quite intense, especially in the desert areas near the pyramids and in Upper Egypt (southern regions), making winter visits significantly more pleasant.

Peak Tourist Season:  While this is the peak tourist season, and you can expect more crowds at major attractions, the benefits of the cooler weather generally outweigh the drawbacks of the higher number of visitors. Planning your visits early in the morning can help avoid the largest crowds.

Things to Consider

Nile Cruises: This is also an excellent time for Nile cruises, as the weather is perfect for enjoying the scenery along the banks of the Nile between Luxor and Aswan.

Red Sea Resorts: For those interested in visiting the Red Sea resorts, such as Hurghada or Sharm el-Sheikh, the winter months offer comfortable weather for snorkeling and diving, though water temperatures may be a bit cooler than in the summer.

Desert Nights: Nights can be cool, especially in the desert, so packing some warmer clothing for the evenings is advisable.

Holiday Seasons: Be aware of major holidays, such as Christmas and New Year, when planning your trip, as these times can be particularly busy and prices may be higher.

In summary, visiting Egypt between October and April allows you to enjoy the country's historical and natural wonders in the most comfortable climatic conditions, though it's always wise to prepare for the specific conditions of the month you choose to visit

What are hieroglyphs and how were they used by ancient Egyptians?

Hieroglyphs are the ancient writing system of Egypt, consisting of symbols that represent objects, concepts, sounds, and ideas. This script was used by the ancient Egyptians for more than 3,000 years, making it one of the oldest writing forms in the history of human civilization. The term "hieroglyph" originates from the Greek words "hieros" (sacred) and "glyphein" (to carve), reflecting the script's initial perception as 'sacred carvings.'

Characteristics and Uses :

Pictographic Origins: Hieroglyphs began as pictographs, where each symbol represented a tangible object. Over time, these symbols evolved to include more abstract concepts, including sounds and ideas.

Complex System: The writing system included over 700 symbols and was quite complex. It combined logographic (a word represented by a single symbol), syllabic (a symbol represents a syllable), and alphabetic elements (a symbol represents a single sound), making it a versatile means of communication.

Writing Surfaces: Hieroglyphs were carved into stone monuments, tombs, and temples, and were also written on papyrus, a paper-like material made from the papyrus plant, for more everyday purposes like record-keeping, storytelling, religious texts, and correspondence.

Purpose and Significance

Religious and Ceremonial Use: Hieroglyphs were considered the language of the gods. They were used extensively in religious texts, magical inscriptions, funerary texts like the Pyramid Texts, Coffin Texts, and the Book of the Dead. These texts aimed to secure a safe passage and a prosperous afterlife for the deceased.

Administrative and Historical Records: The ancient Egyptians also used hieroglyphs for administrative purposes, including recording census data, agricultural yields, tax information, and military campaigns. They served as a means to document the history, achievements, and everyday life in ancient Egypt.

Decorative and Symbolic: Hieroglyphs adorned the walls of temples and tombs, not just as texts but as part of the overall decorative scheme that had symbolic meanings, often intended to honor the gods or commemorate the deeds of the dead.

Decipherment:

The understanding of hieroglyphs was lost around the 4th century AD, after which the symbols became a mystery. The decipherment of hieroglyphs began with the discovery of the Rosetta Stone in 1799, which features a decree written in three scripts: Greek, Demotic, and Hieroglyphic. The French scholar Jean-François Champollion made a breakthrough in the early 19th century by translating the hieroglyphs using the Greek script as a comparative guide, thus unlocking the language of ancient Egypt to the modern world.

Hieroglyphs offer invaluable insights into the life, culture, beliefs, and practices of ancient Egypt, providing a direct link to the thoughts and voices of its people across millennia.
